Week 1 UNLOAD Task 3: OIL Wey

Day three brings you the challenge to:

Avoid processed vegetable oils all day

The best way to do this is to:

  • Eat freshly prepared food cooked in avocado, coconut or olive oil
  • Avoid pre-packaged and pre-prepared foods
  • Avoid fried foods
  • Avoid take-out foods
  • Read all nutritional labels and refrain from eating foods containing vegetable oils, including canola oil, sunflower oil, palm kernel oil, hydrogenated or modified fats/oils. 

We now know that the age-old theory that fats are bad for us is a myth. We can finally move away from the belief that we need to follow a low fat diet, and we can happily enjoy things like nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut and other fats in our diets. 

We actually need fats for our bodies to function, and making sure that there are enough available for the body to use is essential for good health. What we need to be aware of, however, is how these fats affect us; as with anything, there are still good and bad ones! 

Now, we’ve mentioned a few plant fats above. In their whole form, they are typically really good for you. Sometimes, they aren’t, and it’s because of how they are changed when they’re used in the food manufacturing process. Hydrogenated oils have long been used to make food more shelf stable, and oils that have been extracted from plants such as sunflower and canola, are common. When they are hydrogenated, however, they have been chemically altered to be made into a solid form, where a hydrogen atom is added to the oil, which makes it more difficult for the body to use. This is what makes hydrogenated oils so unhealthy and potentially dangerous! 

Many packaged foods and products contact hydrogenated oils. So, for today, eat only fresh produce and freshly prepared foods with whole ingredients. As far as possible, stay away from all and any packaged items, and select only those you know of that don’t contain any altered oils.
