    General Massage Therapy Questions

Essential information about massage therapy and our practice

What is massage therapy and how does it work?

Massage therapy is a healthcare practice that uses manual techniques to manipulate soft tissues, muscles, and joints. It works by improving circulation, reducing muscle tension, promoting relaxation, and stimulating the body's natural healing processes. Our registered massage therapists use evidence-based techniques to address specific health concerns and promote overall wellness.

Are your massage therapists licensed and registered?

Yes, all our massage therapists are Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) licensed by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). They have completed rigorous education and training programs and maintain continuing education requirements to ensure the highest standards of care.

Is massage therapy covered by insurance?

Most extended health insurance plans cover massage therapy when performed by registered massage therapists. Coverage varies by plan, typically ranging from $300-$1000+ per year. We provide detailed receipts with all necessary information for insurance claims and offer direct billing with many insurance providers. (Direct Billing is not available currently)

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive health history and assessment (5-10 minutes), discussion of your goals and concerns, the massage treatment (30-90 minutes depending on your booking), and aftercare instructions. We'll explain everything beforehand and ensure you're comfortable throughout the entire process. *please note that all of these aspects are part of the booked appointment time.

What to expect during your massage therapy experience

How often should I receive massage therapy?

Treatment frequency depends on your specific condition and goals. For acute injuries, we might recommend weekly sessions initially. For chronic conditions, bi-weekly sessions often work well. For maintenance and wellness, monthly sessions are typically sufficient. Your therapist will create a personalized treatment plan based on your needs.

What should I wear during a massage?

You should undress to your comfort level. Most people undress completely, but you can keep on undergarments if you prefer. You'll be properly draped with sheets throughout the treatment, with only the area being worked on exposed. Your comfort and privacy are our top priorities.

    Will massage therapy hurt?

Massage therapy should not be painful, though some techniques (like deep tissue work) may cause temporary discomfort as we work through areas of tension. We always work within your comfort level and encourage communication during treatment. Any discomfort should feel therapeutic, not harmful.

What should I do after my massage?

After your massage, drink plenty of water to help flush toxins, avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day, apply ice to any sore areas if needed, and listen to your body. Some people feel relaxed and energized, while others may feel slightly tired. Both responses are normal.

    Health Conditions and Safety

Information about specific conditions and treatment safety

Can massage therapy help with chronic pain?

Yes, massage therapy is highly effective for many types of chronic pain including back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and headaches. Our therapists use targeted techniques to address the underlying causes of pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and promote healing.

Is massage therapy safe during pregnancy?

Prenatal massage is safe when performed by therapists trained in pregnancy massage techniques. We use specialized positioning and gentle techniques appropriate for each trimester. Massage during pregnancy can help with back pain, swelling, stress, and overall pregnancy wellness.

Can massage therapy help with stress and anxiety?

Absolutely! Massage therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress hormones like cortisol. Regular massage can significantly reduce anxiety levels, improve mood, enhance sleep quality, and support overall mental health.

What conditions should not receive massage therapy?

Massage may not be appropriate for certain conditions including blood clots, severe osteoporosis, open wounds, certain cancers, or acute infections. We always conduct a thorough health screening and will refer you to your physician if we have any concerns about the safety of treatment.
